We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Currency Design team here at De La Rue. The design department of De La Rue provides an end-to-end process from concept design to prototype proof. We have specialists working on substrate, feature and concept design; origination; engraving and proofing. The design software and infrastructure is an integral part of the end-to-end design process and a key link to banknote, feature and substrate manufacturing site.

The Vacancy

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Currency Design team here at De La Rue. The design department of De La Rue provides an end-to-end process from concept design to prototype proof. We have specialists working on substrate, feature and concept design; origination; engraving and proofing. The design software and infrastructure is an integral part of the end-to-end design process and a key link to banknote, feature and substrate manufacturing site.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will lead the software team who form part of a cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team responsible for maintaining and extending world-class design realisation and engraving tools used to create industry-leading banknote designs.

You will be hands-on implementing new features and addressing technical debt within the products you look after. Alongside this, you will help coach and mentor more junior team members, acting as a technical escalation point and promoting quality and best practices from within the team. You will work closely with the Design Management to set a technical roadmap, liaising with end-users to push the products forward.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of quality, simple software using appropriate patterns
  • Relentlessly focus on our users’ needs, driving incremental delivery of software that has the highest value and address areas of risk in a timely manner
  • Promote knowledge sharing across the team and department, so colleagues can collaborate with you on the same codebase.
  • Ensure your team and colleagues are updated regularly on your work through agile ceremonies and use of software development lifecycle tools (e.g. Azure DevOps, Jira).
  • Proactively identify risks (i.e. security, technical debt, antipatterns) associated with the software and drive the implementation of methods for alleviation.
  • Provide mentoring to colleagues and take an active role in their professional development.
  • Support the delivery leads and architecture colleagues in identifying and defining the technical tasks and activities required to deliver user stories.

Working hours: Full Time – 36.5 hrs per week

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Strong understanding and demonstrable commercial experience using C++ and Perl and writing and maintaining complex software
  • Experience of working in an agile team environment with the ability to set up and establish a new software project from scratch, encompassing best practice, build and release processes, and automated testing
  • Good technical skills with knowledge of solution design and application architecture with proven ability to envision, design and deliver software solutions that meet user needs and/or solve business problems
  • Experience in leading small teams of software developers for technical delivery
  • Substantial experience with team development responsibilities – fulfilling activities such as mentoring and developing colleagues, promoting best practice, introducing new tools, creating rapid prototypes, or developing proofs of concept
